Hardware is somewhere between 5% and 15% of what a piece of furniture costs, and it is reliably the first thing that fails. It is also the part a customer touches every single day, which means it is the part that forms the daily impression of whether the object was well made.
In this climate the distinction between solid brass and plated brass-effect is not a matter of connoisseurship. It is a two-year practical test with a predictable outcome, and it is worth understanding before you specify anything.
What each one actually is
Solid brass is an alloy of copper and zinc, brass all the way through. Cast, extruded or turned, then finished. When it is scratched, what shows underneath is brass.
Plated hardware is a base metal — zinc alloy, steel, sometimes aluminium — with a thin coating applied electrolytically or by vapour deposition, often finished with a clear lacquer on top. When it is scratched, what shows underneath is grey.
There is a third category worth naming: brass-effect paint or powder coating on a base metal, which is not plating at all and fails faster than either.

Five tests, none of which need tools
- The magnet test. A magnet will not stick to solid brass. It will stick to plated steel — but not to plated zinc alloy, so this test only rules in, never out
- The weight test. Brass is dense: about 8.5 g/cm³ against 6.6 for zinc alloy and 2.7 for aluminium. A solid brass handle feels startlingly heavy for its size
- The hidden-scratch test. Scratch the back of the fixing or the underside of the handle with a key. Yellow underneath means solid; grey or white means plated
- The edge test. Look at the sharpest corner or the edge of a screw hole. Plating is thinnest there and will show the base metal first
- The sound test. Tap two handles together. Solid brass rings; plated zinc gives a dull click
Why plating fails here faster than elsewhere
Three local conditions do it. Humidity swings from single figures to 70%+ within weeks, which cycles the coating against a base metal that expands at a different rate. Airborne dust in this city is abrasive, so every cleaning pass with a cloth is a mild polishing pass. And handles are touched by hands carrying salt and oils, which attacks the coating exactly where the wear is highest.
The result is a piece of furniture that looks perfect for eighteen months and then, quite suddenly, looks cheap. Nothing on the piece changed except 4 microns of coating at six points, and there is nothing to be done about it because the plating cannot be reapplied at home or in a workshop.
Patina is not tarnish
These two words are used interchangeably and they describe opposite things. Tarnish is the grey-brown sulphide film that forms on neglected brass; it is uniform, dull and dead. Patina is the warm, uneven darkening that develops on used brass, deeper in the recesses and lighter where hands pass — it is a record of use and it is the reason antique hardware looks the way it does.
You cannot buy patina and it is very difficult to fake convincingly. What you can do is let it happen, which requires unlacquered brass and about three years. In a country where most furniture is polished aggressively, this needs saying: leaving brass alone is a legitimate and traditional decision.
If you prefer bright brass, that is entirely reasonable too — it simply means lacquered hardware and accepting that the lacquer needs redoing every five to eight years, or unlacquered brass and a polish every few months.
How to clean brass, and how to ruin it
Almost all brass damage in domestic settings is caused by cleaning.
- Never use an abrasive cream or a scouring pad on lacquered brass — it removes the lacquer in exactly the pattern of your polishing
- Never use a proprietary metal polish on plated hardware. It removes the plating. The bottle does not say this
- For unlacquered brass: a soft cloth, warm water, a drop of mild detergent, dried immediately. That is it, for routine cleaning
- To brighten unlacquered brass occasionally: half a lemon and a teaspoon of salt, rubbed, then rinsed and dried thoroughly. Old, effective and cheap
- For lacquered brass: dust only. If it has gone patchy, the lacquer has failed and it needs stripping and redoing, not polishing
- Never leave brass wet, especially during monsoon. Water sitting in a recess is where verdigris starts
One further point specific to this region: many cleaners will use the same cloth on brass and on marble. Metal polish residue etches honed marble. Keep the cloths separate and say so explicitly, because it will otherwise happen.
Where hardware quality shows most
Not every fitting needs to be solid brass. Money is best spent where the failure would be visible or expensive.
- Handles and pulls — touched daily, seen constantly. Solid, always
- Sabots and foot caps — kicked, mopped against, and structural. Solid, cast rather than pressed
- Hinges — a failed hinge means a door that no longer closes. Buy quality steel with a proper finish; solid brass hinges are traditional but soft
- Drawer runners — the mechanism matters far more than the metal. Full-extension, soft-close, from a named manufacturer with a load rating
- Interior fittings — hidden, so spend on function rather than material
- Castors — matched to the floor. The wrong castor marks a marble floor permanently within a month
Cast, extruded or pressed
Even within solid brass there is a hierarchy, and it is visible on the back of the component.
Cast hardware is poured into a mould: heavy, with slightly soft detail and a faint parting line. It is the traditional method and it produces the depth of relief that period Deco hardware has. Extruded hardware is pushed through a die, which suits long straight profiles like bar pulls and is excellent for them. Pressed or stamped hardware is punched from sheet, which is thin, light, and hollow on the reverse.
Turn a handle over. A solid back or a filled reverse means cast. A hollow shell with a folded edge means pressed, and no amount of brass content will make it feel substantial.
Hardware is the part of a piece your hand meets. It is a strange place to save five per cent.
What it costs to do properly
On a sideboard, replacing six pressed plated pulls with six cast solid brass ones typically adds 3–6% to the total price of the piece. On a wardrobe with more doors it is more, but rarely above 8%. That is the entire economics of this decision, and it is why a piece with cheap hardware is usually cheap in ways you cannot see either.
