"Pure solid wood" is the most effective sentence in Pakistani furniture retail. It is also, on its own, almost meaningless — it tells you nothing about the species, the seasoning, the joints or the finish, which are the four things that actually determine whether the piece survives.
I say this as someone who sells both. The right answer is not one or the other; it is the correct construction for each part of a piece. What follows is where each genuinely wins, and how to tell a good veneered piece from the particleboard-and-foil version that has given veneer its reputation here.
What "veneer" actually means
A veneer is a thin leaf of real timber — typically 0.6mm, sometimes 1.5mm for a thicker "constructional" veneer — sliced from a log and glued to a substrate. It is real wood. The species is real, the grain is real, the figure is real. What it is not is thick.
The substrate underneath is what varies, and it is the entire quality question:

A walnut veneer on marine ply is a fine piece of furniture. The same veneer on chipboard is a five-year object. Identical from the front, and the difference is visible only at a cut edge or the back panel — which is exactly why you should look at both.
Where veneer is genuinely better than solid
Three cases, and they are not marginal.
Wide, flat surfaces
A 90cm-wide solid timber panel moves 6–10mm across its width between a Lahore June and a Lahore August. Restrained — glued into a frame, screwed to a carcass — it cups, splits, or tears its joints. A veneered panel is dimensionally stable because the substrate does not move, which is why every serious wardrobe door, sideboard side and desk top in the world is veneered.
Figured timber
Burl, curl and quilted figure only exist as veneer. Their grain runs in every direction, which makes them beautiful and makes them impossible as solid boards. If you want a sunburst front or a burl drawer face, you want veneer — there is no alternative. The techniques are set out in marquetry, lacquer and burl.
Matched runs
Consecutive leaves from one log let a maker mirror a figure across a door pair or run one continuous grain across three metres of joinery. Solid timber cannot do this at all.
Where solid is genuinely better
- Anything that takes a load through its end grain — legs, rails, stretchers, chair frames. A veneered leg is not a thing
- Edges and corners that get knocked. Solid timber dents and can be sanded back; a veneered edge chips through to the substrate and cannot be repaired invisibly
- Anything that will be refinished more than once. You get one careful sanding out of a 0.6mm veneer, and that is it
- Table tops, if — and only if — the maker knows how to allow for movement with buttons, breadboard ends and matched grain direction
- Drawer sides and backs, where thin solid timber outlasts anything else and always has
- Mouldings, profiles and any shaped edge. A profile cut into veneered board exposes the substrate at every curve
This is why a well-made piece is usually both: a solid timber frame and structure, veneered panels where the surfaces are wide. That is not a compromise or a cost saving. It is how good furniture has been built since the seventeenth century.
How to check a veneered piece in a showroom
- Look at a cut edge — the top edge of a door, or the front edge of a shelf. Solid lipping shows continuous long grain; a bare substrate shows layers or specks
- Open a door and look at the inside face. A properly balanced panel is veneered both sides. Veneer on the outside only will cup
- Look at the back panel. 3mm hardboard stapled into a rebate is production work; a solid or ply back set into a groove is not
- Pull a drawer fully out. Dovetails at the front corners, a bottom in a groove, and a smooth runner without wobble
- Push down on the middle of the widest shelf. Any visible deflection under hand pressure will become a permanent sag under books
- Tap the top of the carcass with a knuckle. Hollow, drummy sounds mean a lightweight core; a dull thud means mass
The impostors: foil, laminate and printed grain
These are not veneer and should never be described as it. They are the reason "veneer" is a suspect word in this market.
- Melamine foil — a printed paper impregnated with resin. Repeats exactly every 30–60cm, and shows a halftone dot pattern under a magnifier
- High-pressure laminate — durable and honest when it is not pretending to be timber. Excellent for a kitchen worktop, wrong for a Deco console
- PVC edge banding — a plastic strip on the edge of a board. Look for the slightly rounded, slightly too-perfect edge, and a colour that does not quite match the face
- Printed "3D" grain — the worst of them. Looks convincing in a photograph and looks like plastic in person, which is why it sells online
The repeat test settles all four. Walk 60cm along the piece and look for the same knot twice. Real timber never repeats.
What each construction costs, roughly
For the same design in the same species, taking a chipboard-and-foil version as the baseline:
- Chipboard with printed foil: 1×
- MDF with 0.6mm real veneer: 1.6–2×
- Blockboard or ply with 0.6mm real veneer, solid lipping: 2.5–3.5×
- Solid timber throughout, properly seasoned and jointed: 4–6×
Note what that means: a good veneered piece costs roughly half of solid and outperforms it on wide surfaces. The money is better spent on seasoning, joints and finish than on insisting every component is solid.
Solid where it takes load, veneered where it is wide, and properly dried in both cases. That sentence is the whole of it.
The honest sales line
When someone tells you a piece is "100% solid wood", ask three follow-up questions: which species, dried to what moisture content, and how is the top fixed to the frame? A maker will answer all three in twenty seconds. If the answers do not come, the phrase was doing the job it was designed to do.
