Between April and September Lahore delivers a set of conditions that most furniture was not designed for: sustained air temperatures above 40°C, surface temperatures behind glass far higher than that, ultraviolet at an intensity northern manufacturers never test against, and airborne dust for the whole period.
Furniture does fail here, and it fails in predictable ways. Almost all of it is avoidable at the specification stage, and the rest is manageable with about twenty minutes of attention a month.
What actually breaks, in order of frequency
- Fading on the window side of upholstery and rugs — the most common, and the least noticed until furniture is moved
- Film finishes lifting at edges, particularly on a piece near a window or an outside wall
- Adhesive failure in veneer and edge banding, where heat softens a glue line that was marginal to begin with
- Foam collapse in cushions, accelerated by heat in low-density foam
- Leather drying, hardening and eventually cracking where sun reaches it daily
- Plated hardware wearing through, helped along by dust acting as an abrasive during cleaning
- Splits in solid timber where the piece dried faster than the joint could accommodate
Notice that most of these are not about temperature alone. They are about the combination of heat and a manufacturing decision that was adequate at 25°C.
Ultraviolet: the damage nobody watches happening
UV breaks the chemical bonds in dyes and in the lignin of timber. It is cumulative, it is irreversible, and it happens whether or not the room feels hot — a cool, bright north room fades things too.
The effects differ by material in ways that surprise people:

The practical consequence: a walnut table half-covered by a runner for a year will have two different colours when the runner comes off, and it cannot be blended without refinishing the whole top. Either cover the whole surface or none of it.
Heat and the failure of glue lines
Most furniture adhesives soften above about 60°C. Air temperature never reaches that indoors, but a dark veneered surface in direct sun behind glass reaches it easily — I have measured 68°C on a dark sideboard top in June, in a room where the air was 34°C.
Repeated cycling above the softening point is what makes edge banding lift and veneer bubble. The fix is specification: PVA of the right grade or a urea-formaldehyde adhesive for veneer work, solid lipping rather than plastic edge banding, and — most simply — not putting a veneered piece where direct sun lands on it for four hours a day.
Solid timber is not exempt. Rapid one-sided heating drives moisture out of the exposed face faster than the underside, and the resulting differential is what cups a tabletop. This is why a top should be finished on both faces, always, and why a maker who finishes only the show face is telling you something.
Dust: the underrated factor
Lahore’s airborne particulate is fine and abrasive, and it is present in domestic interiors for most of the year. It does three things to furniture, all of them slow.
- It abrades finishes every time a dry cloth is dragged across a surface — effectively very fine sandpaper
- It embeds in pile: rugs, velvet and bouclé all hold it, and it grinds against the fibres each time the surface is compressed
- It settles into brass recesses and, combined with humidity later in the year, starts corrosion in exactly the places that are hardest to clean
The counter-measures are unglamorous and effective: a barely damp microfibre cloth rather than a dry one, weekly vacuuming of upholstery with the correct head, and closing windows on high-dust days rather than relying on the fan. A doormat that actually traps grit at every external door removes more dust from a house than any other single intervention.
What to specify for a house here
- Timber kiln-dried to 8–10%, verified with a meter, not assumed
- Wide surfaces in a low-movement species — walnut, or quarter-sawn oak. The comparison is in walnut, oak or sheesham
- Tops fixed with buttons or Z-clips, never screwed rigidly through a fixed hole
- Both faces of every panel finished, including undersides and the backs of doors
- Penetrating oil finishes on anything that will meet direct sun, so damage stays repairable
- Solid lipping rather than plastic edge banding on veneered panels
- Solid brass rather than plated for every touched fitting
- Foam at 33–40 kg/m³ in seat cushions, because heat accelerates the collapse of anything lighter
- Upholstery with a stated lightfastness rating if it faces a window
The summer routine, monthly
Twenty minutes, once a month, between April and September.
- Rotate seat and back cushions so compression and fading are shared
- Rotate rugs 180° once at the start of summer and once at the end
- Move any object sitting permanently on a timber surface — a lamp, a tray, a photo frame — a few centimetres, so no hard shadow line develops
- Check the window side of upholstery against the shaded side. If a difference is appearing, address the curtains now rather than next year
- Wipe timber with a barely damp cloth, dry immediately, and check whether water still beads on oiled surfaces
- Feed leather twice a summer with a proper conditioner — not a household oil, which goes rancid
- Look at the edges and corners of veneered pieces near windows for any sign of lifting. Caught early, a lifted edge is a ten-minute glue-and-clamp job
The air conditioning trap
Running air conditioning hard through summer drops indoor relative humidity a long way — often into the twenties. Timber that reached equilibrium at 45% humidity will shrink at 25%, and the shrinkage shows as hairline gaps opening at joints and panels rattling in frames.
This is not a fault. It is seasonal movement, it will close again in August when the monsoon arrives, and furniture built with floating panels and button-fixed tops absorbs it invisibly. Furniture built rigidly does not, which is why a piece that is fine in one house cracks in another with a colder thermostat. The other half of this cycle is in monsoon humidity and wood movement.
Nothing on this page is exotic. It is the same furniture, specified for the climate it will actually live in rather than the one the catalogue was photographed in.
What holds up best, honestly
After enough summers, a pattern: solid or well-veneered hardwood with an oil finish, wool upholstery and wool rugs, solid brass, honed stone. Almost every one of those is the traditional, expensive answer, and their durability here is not a coincidence — they are the materials that were used in this climate before air conditioning existed, and they were selected by three generations of failure.
