A sofa is the most expensive thing in most drawing rooms and the hardest to assess, because everything that determines its lifespan is sealed inside it. You are shown a fabric swatch and a price. The frame, the suspension and the foam — the three things that decide whether this is a twenty-year object or a five-year one — are behind upholstery you are not allowed to open.
You can still find out. What follows is the sequence I run in a showroom, in order, and it takes about four minutes.
The frame — and the four-corner lift
The frame is the sofa. Everything else can be replaced; the frame cannot, and reupholstering a bad frame is money spent on a lost cause.
What you want is kiln-dried hardwood at 8–10% moisture content, corner-blocked, and joined with dowels or mortise-and-tenon plus glue and screws. What you frequently get is green softwood, stapled, with the staples doing the structural work. Green timber shrinks around its fixings for the first two years, and a stapled joint that has shrunk is a joint that creaks and then fails.
- Lift one front corner of the sofa about 15cm off the floor, holding only that corner
- Watch the other front corner. On a rigid frame it rises within a few centimetres. On a weak or racked frame it stays on the floor and the sofa twists
- Set it down and listen. Creaking during that lift is a frame telling you about itself
- Press hard on the top of the arm, near the front. It should not flex, and it should not tick
- Sit down hard in one corner, then in the middle. Any lateral movement is a frame problem, not a cushion problem
The suspension — what sits between you and the frame
Three systems dominate, and the price difference between them is real.

Eight-way hand-tied is a genuine craft: each spring tied by hand to its neighbours in eight directions so the whole seat moves as one plane. It takes hours per sofa and it is the reason old sofas still sit well. Sinuous springs are the sensible modern standard and entirely respectable. A plywood deck with foam laid on it is not suspension at all — it is a bench.
To tell them apart without opening anything: sit down heavily in the middle of the seat and feel what happens at the edges. A sprung seat transmits movement across the whole deck. A foam-on-ply seat does nothing except compress under you.
The foam — density, not softness
The number that matters is density, measured in kilograms per cubic metre, and it is not the same thing as firmness. A high-density foam can be soft; a low-density foam can be firm and will still collapse. Density measures how much material is in the foam, which is exactly what determines how long it holds its shape.
- Under 25 kg/m³ — packaging foam. Will flatten within two years of daily use
- 25–32 kg/m³ — acceptable for backs and arms, marginal for seats
- 33–40 kg/m³ — the correct band for seat cushions in a family house
- 40 kg/m³ + — high-resilience foam, firm and long-lived
- Feather or down wrap over a foam core — the luxury construction: a dense core for support, feather for the soft surface. It needs plumping weekly, which some people love and some resent
In Lahore’s heat, low-density foam degrades faster than the same foam would in a temperate climate. A cushion that flattens in the second summer was underspecified on the day it was made, and no amount of turning will bring it back.
The cushions themselves
Two details, both easy to check, both good predictors of the rest.
First, are the seat cushions reversible? A cushion that can be flipped and rotated wears evenly and lasts materially longer. A cushion with a shaped top or a fixed back is single-sided and will develop a permanent hollow where the heaviest person sits.
Second, are the covers removable? Zips on the underside of a cushion cost the maker very little and are worth a great deal in a house with children — a cover that comes off can be cleaned or replaced without touching the sofa.
The upholstery work
You cannot see the frame, but you can see the tailoring, and tailoring correlates strongly with everything hidden.
- Pattern matching across a seam. A patterned fabric that continues across the cushion joins was cut carefully and generously
- Straight, even seams with no puckering. Puckering means the fabric was pulled to fit rather than cut to fit
- Piping that runs true, with no wobble along an arm
- Consistent gaps between the cushions — a 5mm gap at one end and 15mm at the other means the frame is not square
- Tufting depth even across the width. On a channel-tufted piece each channel should be identical, which is a slow job and the first thing skipped
- The underside: a dust cover, no exposed staples, feet fixed with a bolt into a threaded insert rather than screwed straight into softwood
Fabric — and the number to ask for
Upholstery fabric is rated for abrasion in Martindale cycles. It is a real, testable figure and any serious supplier will quote it.
- Under 15,000 — decorative use only. Cushions, headboards
- 15,000–25,000 — domestic, light use
- 25,000–40,000 — domestic, heavy use. Where a family sofa should be

What it should cost, and what the money buys
Two sofas of the same size can differ by a factor of four, and the difference is almost never the fabric. Taking a production sofa on a stapled softwood frame as the baseline:
- Stapled softwood frame, foam on ply deck, 22 kg/m³ foam: 1×
- Doweled hardwood frame, sinuous springs, 32 kg/m³ foam: 2–2.5×
- Kiln-dried hardwood frame, corner-blocked, eight-way hand-tied, 40 kg/m³ high-resilience foam, hand-tailored covers: 4–5×
The third one is still being used in twenty-five years and can be reupholstered twice in that time. The first is at the carpenter’s by year five. Over a working lifetime the expensive sofa is the cheaper object, which is an argument that only works if the frame is genuinely what it is claimed to be — hence the lift test.
Everything you can see on a sofa can be replaced. The one thing you cannot see is the one thing you cannot replace.
