Walk through any residential neighbourhood in Lahore after dark and look in through the windows. Almost every room is lit by a single bright source in the middle of the ceiling, often a fan-light, often at a cool colour temperature. Every room looks the same: flat, shadowless, and slightly institutional.
It is the single cheapest thing to fix in a house, and it is the one that changes how a room feels more than paint, furniture or flooring. The method is not new — restaurants and hotels have used it for a century — and it comes down to putting light at three different heights instead of one.
Why one ceiling light fails
A single overhead source produces uniform illumination and no shadow modelling. Faces are lit flat from above, which is the least flattering angle there is. Textures — a rug, a fluted cabinet, a bouclé sofa — disappear, because texture is visible only when light rakes across it. And the corners of the room fall away into relative darkness, which the eye reads as the room being smaller than it is.
There is also a colour problem. Most ceiling fittings sold here carry cool white lamps at 5000–6500K, chosen because they look brighter for the same wattage. At night, that colour temperature suppresses the body’s wind-down response and makes warm materials — timber, brass, terracotta — look grey. A room finished in walnut and brass under a 6000K lamp is a room whose materials have been switched off.
The three layers
Ambient — the general wash
Fills the room and stops it feeling like a cave. This is what a ceiling light is for, and it should be dimmable and warm. Better still: replace the single point with several smaller sources — perimeter downlights, a pendant over a specific object, or an uplighter that bounces off the ceiling and makes the ceiling itself the light source.
Task — light where something is done
A reading lamp beside a chair, a pendant over a dining table, a lamp on a desk. Task light is directional, is positioned relative to a person rather than to the room, and is what allows you to turn the ambient layer down.
Accent — light on a thing rather than a space
A picture light, a lamp inside a bookcase, a low uplight grazing a textured wall, a spot on a sculpture. Accent light is what makes a room look designed rather than lit, and it is almost always the layer that is missing.

The target is four to six switchable sources in a drawing room. That sounds excessive and is not: it means the room has an afternoon setting, a dinner setting and a late-evening setting, and the difference between them is the difference between a room you sit in and a room you leave.
Colour temperature: pick one and stay there
Mixing colour temperatures within a sightline makes both look wrong — the warmer one looks yellow and dirty, the cooler one looks blue and clinical. This is the most common lighting fault in newly built houses here, usually because the downlights were bought by the electrician and the lamps were bought by the owner.
- 2700K — living rooms, bedrooms, dining. Warm, flattering, correct for evening use
- 3000K — kitchens, bathrooms, hallways. Slightly crisper without going cold
- 3500–4000K — home offices and workshops, where alertness matters
- 5000K + — garages, utility. Not in a room where anyone relaxes
- CRI 90 or above for any room containing timber, textiles or art. Below CRI 80, a walnut sideboard reads grey and a rug loses a third of its colour
How much light a room actually needs
Lumens, not watts. Watts measure consumption; lumens measure output, and LED has broken every rule of thumb people learned with incandescent bulbs.

Then distribute that total across your layers rather than delivering it from one fitting. A drawing room hitting 2,500 lumens from six sources feels completely different from the same 2,500 lumens from one, even though a light meter cannot tell them apart.
Where each fitting goes
- Floor uplighter: in the corner furthest from the window, throwing light onto the ceiling. This is the fitting that removes the cave feeling and the one most rooms lack
- Table lamp: beside seating, with the bottom of the shade at roughly seated eye level — about 105–115cm from the floor. Higher and you see the bulb; lower and it lights the table rather than the room
- Reading floor lamp: behind and to the side of a chair, shade at about 120cm
- Dining pendant: 75–85cm above the table top. Higher and it lights the room instead of the table; lower and people cannot see each other across it
- Picture light: sized to about two-thirds the width of the picture, angled at 30° to avoid glare on glazed work
- Downlights: never in a grid. Place them relative to what they are lighting — a wall wash 60–90cm out from the wall, or over a specific piece
Dimmers, and the one thing to check
Dimmers turn one room into three and cost very little. The catch is compatibility: many LED lamps flicker, buzz or refuse to dim below 30% on a dimmer designed for incandescent loads. Buy trailing-edge dimmers, buy dimmable lamps, and test one before you buy twelve.
Where a dimmer is impossible — rented property, existing wiring — the workaround is simply more switched lamps on their own plugs. Four lamps you can switch individually give you most of what a dimmer gives you, without an electrician.
Materials change what lighting does
A room with a marble floor bounces light hard and cool; a room with a wool rug absorbs it. Polished surfaces produce specular glare from any bare bulb in the room; honed and matt surfaces do not. Brass and gold warm the light they reflect; chrome and nickel cool it.
This is why lighting cannot be specified separately from finishes, and why I set them out together. If your room is marble-floored, white-walled and glazed on one side — which describes a great many new DHA houses — you need more warmth and more accent light than the lumen table suggests, because the room is throwing everything back at you. A drawing room lighting plan, complete
For a 4.9 × 4.3m room, in the order I would install them:
- Dimmable ceiling source at 2700K, on its own switch — the ambient layer, used at maybe 40% most evenings
- Floor uplighter in the far corner
- Table lamp on a console behind the sofa
- Table lamp or reading floor lamp beside the accent chairs
- One picture light or a low uplight grazing a textured wall
- Total around 2,500–3,000 lumens, all at 2700K, all CRI 90+
Six fittings, five switches, one colour temperature. That is the whole method, and it is why a hotel lobby at 9pm feels the way it does and most drawing rooms do not.
One light in the ceiling is not lighting a room. It is preventing a room from being dark, which is a different and much smaller ambition.
